    Local Processing

Your PDF never leaves your browser — Freshmii doesn't upload it to any server. The redacted copy is generated and downloaded locally.

Website assets load from hosting/CDN. Supported private file and text processing runs locally in your browser.

    Evidence Freshmii claim
Processing model Browser-local page code handles the tool action. Freshmii does not provide a private-content upload API for this workflow.
Account requirement No account, sign-up, paid tier, or server-side workspace is required.
Supported formats Inputs: PDF | Outputs: PDF
Offline behavior Core tool actions run after page assets load; disconnecting afterward should not create a Freshmii upload path.

Verification step Open DevTools Network, clear the log after page load, run the tool action, and check for upload/API requests.

    What is PDF Redactor?

Free browser-local PDF redactor for covering sensitive document content before AI upload, email, or external review. Draw and adjust redaction boxes over sensitive areas and export a redacted PDF copy. Your PDF never leaves your browser. Pair with Metadata Remover when hidden document properties also need cleanup.

    How to Use

    1. Drop a supported PDF into the upload area.
    2. Draw rectangles over every sensitive region.
    3. Move or resize boxes until they fully cover the content.
    4. Download the redacted PDF and verify the result before sharing.

    Common Use Cases

    • Redact account numbers from a statement before asking an AI assistant to analyze it.
    • Cover names, signatures, or rates in a contract before external review.
    • Remove visible IDs, dates of birth, or addresses from a form before sharing.
    • Hide credentials or internal references visible in a PDF report.
    • Black out a medical, insurance, or legal PDF before pasting it into an AI assistant for a plain-language summary.
    • Cover salary, rate, or pricing figures in an offer letter or invoice before forwarding it.

    Practical Examples

Redact a bank statement before AI analysis

Input A statement with account numbers and transaction references.
Output A redacted PDF copy where covered regions no longer reveal the selected details.

Prepare a contract for external review

Input A contract with party names, signatures, and pricing terms.
Output A PDF with selected visible fields covered before it is shared.

Hide a credential in a report

Input A PDF report showing an API key on one page.
Output A redacted copy with the key region covered and ready for verification.

    When to Use This Tool

    • Before uploading a PDF to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Copilot — everything visible in it is shared with the AI, so cover the sensitive parts first.
    • Use Metadata Remover when you only need to clear hidden document properties.
    • Use Screenshot Redactor when the source is a flat image rather than a PDF.

    Limitations

    • Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are not supported.
    • Redaction boxes affect only the areas you cover. Content outside those boxes remains in the file.
    • Scanned or image-only PDFs require careful visual review because the sensitive content may be pixels rather than selectable text.

    Quality and Accuracy Notes

    • Always verify the downloaded file by searching, selecting, and visually reviewing redacted areas.
    • Redaction is not a substitute for reviewing the whole document. Metadata, attachments, comments, or hidden layers may require separate cleanup depending on file structure.
    • Use Metadata Inspector or Metadata Remover when document properties such as author, creator, or timestamps also matter.

    Format Support

    Direction Format Support Notes
Input PDF Full Standard non-encrypted PDFs are supported.
Input Encrypted PDF Partial Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
Output Redacted PDF Full Export a redacted copy after drawing and reviewing boxes.

    FAQ

Is PDF redaction the same as drawing a black box?
No — and that difference has burned a lot of people. In most PDF editors a black box is just a shape laid on top of the text: the words are still in the file underneath, so anyone can copy them out or delete the box to reveal them. Almost every famous redaction failure — from improperly redacted federal court filings to leaked government documents — was undone with nothing more than copy-and-paste, no special tools required (both the American Bar Association and the PDF Association have documented the pattern). Real redaction has to remove the underlying content, not just cover it. This tool does exactly that on export: when you press Redact & download, the text and image data under each box is destroyed, not hidden. Always confirm by reopening the saved PDF and trying to select or search the redacted area.
Does this tool upload my PDF?
No. Your PDF stays in your browser the whole time. Freshmii doesn't send it to any server — the redacted copy is generated and downloaded locally.
Does this remove PDF metadata too?
PDF redaction focuses on visible content. Use Metadata Remover when you also need to clear author, creator, timestamp, or other document-property fields.
Can text hidden under a redaction box still be copied from the exported PDF?
Not once you export with Redact & download. Until then the boxes are just visual overlays — but on export this tool bakes them into the page and destroys the underlying text and image data in the covered area, so it can't be selected, searched, or copied out of the saved file. Always verify by reopening the downloaded PDF and trying to select or search the redacted area. This is the difference that matters: a plain black box drawn in many editors only hides content visually and can be deleted to reveal it again.
Is the PDF redactor free, and do I need an account?
Yes — it's completely free, with no account, no sign-up, and nothing to install. Open the page, drop a PDF, draw boxes over the sensitive parts, and download the redacted copy. Your PDF is never uploaded to our servers.
Does the PDF redactor work offline?
Yes. The PDF engine (PDFium) and every asset load from Freshmii itself, not a third-party CDN, so once the page has finished loading you can disconnect your internet and redaction still works. Nothing about your PDF is ever sent to a server — you can confirm it yourself in your browser's DevTools Network tab while you redact.
